Dr. Benjamin Solomon “Ben” Carson, Sr. is a former neurosurgeon, who is a 2016 candidate for President of the United States. He was formerly the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland from 1984 until his retirement in 2013. He came to the limelight when he separated conjoined twins, and a technique for controlling brain seizures. These achievements as a surgeon were both recognized in 2008 with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Dr. Carson delivered a widely publicized speech at the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast. This speech caused him to become a popular conservative figure in political media for his views on social and political issues. On May 4, 2015, Carson announced he was running for the Republican nomination in the 2016 presidential election at a rally in his hometown of Detroit.
His accomplishments as a surgeon are pretty impressive, but they are even more impressive when you study his early life and upbringing.
Carson was born in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Sonya (Copeland) and Robert Solomon Carson, a Seventh-day Adventist minister. Both his parents came from rural Georgia. After his parents divorced when Carson was only eight years old, both he and his older brother, Curtis, were raised by their mother.
In his book, Gifted Hands, Carson tells that, in his youth, he had a violent temper, which I find to be true among boys after their parent’s divorce. When he was in the ninth grade, he says he almost stabbed a friend during an argument. What if he had committed this crime? His life would have taken a whole different direction. He would not be running for President today. That is my opinion, but I believe it would be so. This is just an example of why it is so important to make the right choices. After this incident, he began reading the Book of Proverbs and applying verses on anger. A very wise boy, indeed. The Word of God is wisdom. It is our manual on how to live the good life. As a result, Carson states, he “never had another problem with temper.” Maybe it should be mandatory for every person that is incarcerated to read the Book of Proverbs also. It is God’s book of instruction and was written by King Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived.
Years ago, I read that Carson’s mother encouraged him and his older brother to read books. His mother was instilling in her boys a love of learning. I believe that Dr. Ben Carson is who he is today because of his faith and the love of a Godly mother.
Because of these 2 points alone is why I believe Dr. Ben Carson should be President. We need a Godly and wise man as President to lead our country back to greatness!
