The Beauty of a Woman

 christian woman

What makes a woman beautiful?

The majority of single men would most likely reply, “her figure!”  Married men might say it’s her eyes, her smile, her hair, her humor or the way she laughs.  Ask a woman and she would most likely reply, her hair, her clothes, her makeup.  If you ask a dozen people, you would probably get a dozen different answers.  Not everyone agrees what makes a woman beautiful.

I was shopping at a Coach outlet store while on vacation.   After looking at all the different purses and prices, I finally selected the one I liked and that was within the price I had decided to spend on a new purse.  The young girl who checked me out was petite, with shoulder length, natural brown hair, brown eyes and fair skin with light brown frinkles (freckles…my husband calls them frinkles.) sprinkled across her nose.  She was just a natural beauty…not a lot of makeup, colored hair, jewelry, or fancy clothes, but a beautiful young lady nevertheless.

Are you familiar with this phrase?   “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”  The literal meaning of this phrase is, the perception of beauty is subjective.  So true!  By the way, Shakespeare (swoon…I like Shakespeare), expressed a similar sentiment in Love’s Labours Lost, 1588:

Good Lord Boyet, my beauty, though but mean,  Needs not the painted flourish of your praise:  Beauty is bought by judgement of the eye, Not utter’d by base sale of chapmen’s tongues:

Benjamin Franklin, in Poor Richard’s Almanack, 1741, wrote:

Beauty, like supreme dominion

Is but supported by opinion

God’s Word embraces distinctions between men and women.   Distinct means recognizably different in nature from something else of a similar type.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.  Genesis 1:27 KJV

God created men to be men and women to be women. He clearly made them different in nature, unmistakably, easily distinguishable.  Men are not like women and women are not like men.

Women are graced with beauty from God.  Beauty comes from Him.  He made everything beautiful in this world for His pleasure and for us to enjoy…the mountains, sunsets, the moon, the stars, the laughter of children, a babies cooing, the birds, and flowers.    Every good and perfect gift comes from God, the Creator of heaven and earth.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.  James 1:17 KJV

So what makes a woman beautiful?

God’s grace.  God has gifted and graced a woman with beauty.  She is beautiful when she becomes what He originally designed her to be.

Some godly traits of a woman are:

  • She reads and cherishes God’s Word.
  • She has a calm and quiet spirit.
  • She is graceful.
  • She speaks with wisdom.
  • She is able to be fully trusted by her husband.
  • She desires to be her husband’s most faithful companion.
  • She joyfully embraces being a woman and abhors feminism.
  • She loves and embraces children.
  • She desires to teach younger women the virtues of being a godly woman.
  • She desires and encourages men to be leaders in their homes, churches and society.
  • She desires to build and strengthen her home.
  • She desires to raise and train her children in the ways of God.
  • She believes children are a blessing from God, not a burden.
  • She looks up to, follows, and respects her husband as the leader of their home.
  • She cares for the poor and needy.
  • She spends money wisely.
  • She clothes herself in modesty.

A beautiful woman is one who fears God.

Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.  Proverbs 31:30 KJV

Beauty is vain, because it is not lasting, but a woman who reverently and worshipfully fears the Lord is a woman of beauty.
