Hungry For More Of God?

Have you ever had a food craving but didn’t know what it was you were craving and you tried eating different foods but none of them satisfied that craving?  What about in the spiritual sense?  Are you hungry for more of God but don’t know how to satisfy that spiritual craving?  If so, then I have the answer for you.  Read on.

Just as with the food cravings we try all different kinds of things hoping to satisfy that craving without success the same is true with our spiritual hunger.  You’ve been born again but you have a craving…a longing for more of God.  You go to church, you lift your hands during Praise and Worship, you put money in the offering plate, you attend every church social, volunteer in the nursery, teach a Sunday School class, invite people to church, help feed the poor, clean the church, serve on the welcome committee, the church ground’s committee, help organize the annual Bake Sale and on and on and on.  You work and work for the Lord and the church until your exhausted, frustrated and depleted spiritually.  You wonder is this all there is?  There’s got to more.  Lord, do you see me here?  Where are you, Lord?  You’re hungry for more of God but He seems so far away.

Here’s the problem:  Your focus is on what you’re doing instead of what Jesus did.

 

It’s fine to work in the church and serve on committees, in fact if you’re a Christian you’ll desire to do good works but good works can never take the place of communing with your heavenly Father.  The Bible tells us faith without works is dead.

What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?  Can faith save him?  If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?  Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.  But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.”  Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.  James 2:14-18 NKJV

Works are not the cause of salvation; works are the evidence of salvation.  Faith in Christ always results in good works, however, good works do not save us.  We cannot earn our salvation.  Salvation is a free gift from God, which we receive by faith…by simply believing in Christ’s finished work on the cross.  The works that follow salvation do not make us righteous before God; they simply flow from the regenerated heart as naturally as water flows from a spring.

There’s scripture in Ezekiel that may seem a little odd when you first read it.

So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll.  And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee.  Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.   Ezekiel 3:2-3  KJV

These verses are not talking about eating a roll, like Sister Schubert’s yeast rolls, no, the Prophet of God is talking about receiving the truths of God as food for the soul and to feed upon them by faith and he would be strengthened.  The roll is symbolic for the Word of God…the Bible.  Just as a good homemade yeast roll satisfies us physically, the Bible satisfies our hungry soul spiritually.

If your craving more and not satisfied, ask yourself?  Am I spending time reading and meditating on God’s Word?  Am I spending time alone with God in my prayer closet communing with Him?  Am I listening to the Holy Spirit and what He has to say?

Answering these questions will reveal why your spiritually hungry.  Determine to spend time with God.  Only He can satisfy your hunger for more.

Finally read this promise:

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness:  for they shall be filled.  Matthew 5:6 KJV

Jesus promises if you’re hungry, and thirsty for more, He would satisfy you.
